Helping Clients Become U.S. Citizens
There is no greater honor in the United States than becoming a citizen. If you are a lawful permanent resident (green card holder) and have lived in the U.S. for at least 5 years, you may be eligible for naturalization. If you are married to a U.S. citizen, you may be eligible to apply after 3 years. Certain members of the military, spouses of U.S. citizens stationed abroad, and children of U.S. citizens may also qualify for naturalization.
Applying for U.S. citizenship can be a complex and time-consuming process. At the Law Office Of Patricia M. Machado, P.C., we have helped countless clients successfully navigate the naturalization process. Our Bronx naturalization lawyers can help you prepare for every step, from the citizenship test to the final interview.

How to Apply for Naturalization
When you are ready to apply for naturalization, you will need to file an application with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). This form will ask for detailed information about your background, including your residence, employment, and travel history. You will also need to submit supporting documents and pay the required fees.
After you submit your application, USCIS will send you a notice for biometrics (fingerprinting). You will need to go to a USCIS-authorized location to have your fingerprints taken. USCIS will use your fingerprints to conduct a background check. If you have a criminal record or have committed certain offenses, you may not be eligible for naturalization.
Once your background check is complete, USCIS will send you an appointment notice for an interview. You will need to go to a USCIS office for the interview. You will need to bring the appointment notice and any requested documents. You will also need to bring your green card. If you have traveled outside of the U.S. since you received your green card, you will need to bring your passport and any reentry permits or refugee travel documents.
During the interview, you will need to answer questions about your naturalization application and background. You will also need to take an English language test and a civics test. If you have a medical disability, you may be eligible for an exemption from the English language and civics tests. You will also need to take an Oath of Allegiance to the U.S. If you pass the tests and your application is approved, USCIS will send you a notice for the Oath of Allegiance ceremony. You will need to go to the ceremony and take the Oath of Allegiance.
How Long Does It Take to Get Naturalized?
The naturalization process can be lengthy. However, processing times can vary depending on the USCIS field office where your application is being processed and other factors. If there is an issue with your application or you need to provide additional documentation, the process may take longer.
In some cases, you may be able to expedite the naturalization process. For example, if you are a member of the military or are applying for a job that requires U.S. citizenship, you may be able to request expedited processing. Our Bronx naturalization attorneys can help you understand your options and determine the best way to move forward.
